HomeModule 2: Platform Strategy

The E-commerce Platform Landscape

⏱ 14 min Overview Lesson 5 of 23

Knowing Your Platforms

Every major e-commerce platform has a distinct audience, algorithm, fee structure, and culture. MEO operators don't guess which platforms to use — they understand each one's strengths and match products and strategies accordingly.

🟠Amazon
🟢Shopify
🔵eBay
🟣Etsy
🎵TikTok Shop
🔷Walmart

Platform Decision Framework

  • Traffic Source — Does the platform bring buyers to you (marketplace) or do you bring them yourself (own store)?
  • Fee Structure — Listing fees, referral fees, subscription costs, payment processing
  • Competition Level — How saturated is your niche on this platform?
  • Control Level — How much control do you have over branding, customer data, and pricing?

The Traffic Spectrum

Think of platforms on a spectrum: Marketplace (Amazon, eBay, Etsy) → Social Commerce (TikTok Shop) → Own Channel (Shopify). Marketplaces bring traffic but take control. Own channels give control but require traffic generation.

MEO Principle: Always have at least one marketplace (for built-in traffic) and one own-channel store (for brand equity and customer data ownership).
